The Modern Surfboards Wild Child takes inspiration from classic ’70s fish designs and gives the concept a modern performance twist. Its combination of a traditional fish-inspired outline, contemporary bottom contours, and quad fin setup creates a board that feels fast, loose, and smooth underfoot. The Wild Child is meant to be ridden considerably shorter than your everyday shortboard, with the FCS II Split Keel quad setup recommended to get the most out of its design.
Built in polyurethane, the Wild Child offers a dependable feel with a responsive flex pattern that works across a wide range of conditions, from smaller 1-foot waves up to around 8 feet. A fuller nose and relatively straight outline through the middle and rear of the board provide plenty of stability, while the pronounced swallow tail adds hold and control when you're carving on the wave face.
The bottom contours are designed to keep the board moving. Single concave through the front half helps generate speed and acceleration, transitioning into a softer double concave toward the tail for a lively, responsive feel through turns. Its low rocker keeps the board fast across flatter sections, while also making paddling and wave-catching easier. A fuller rail and tapered foil add stability toward the front while helping balance the control needed from the wider tail.
