The GRX is an extension of the Automatic. The Automatic is our flagship high performance design which really comes alive in good to better waves. Good surfers can make it work in small stuff as well but we were finding that most people wanted the performance gains from the design but tuned to everyday conditions. An Automatic step down so to speak. This is where the GRX comes in.
Dan Boehne took the baseline of his Automatic and approached that DNA with an everyday shortboard design in the GRX. The rockers are the same, nice and curvy, but the GRX features more generous dims and a deeper concave to flatten the center rocker line to help lift over flat sections and generating speed with less effort.
One of the unique design features is the GRX has a "rolled" step rail which in effect takes volume away from the rail line (where you don't want it) and puts it back in the center. This allows to achieve the same thin rail apex from your normal board in the water while turning, but keep or "hide" the volume in the middle (where you need it) for paddle power and efficient volume ratio.
