Help! My Mayhem Mediums are sliding out on bigger waves. (FCS II)

Fin Guru FAQ (FCS II)

Name - Aiden

Height: 6'0"
Weight: 151 lb
Board Brand: Lost
Board Model: Sub Driver 2.0
Board Model: Squash Tail
Board Length: 6'0"
Board Width: 19.0"
Board Thickness: 2.38"
Board Volume: 28.5 Liters
Fin System: FCS II
Fin(s) currently riding: Medium Matt Biolos Performance Core Carbon Thruster
Please describe below what it is you are wanting more of out of your current fin/board experience (example - more drive, tighter turns, more release....etc) or any other questions you might have about fins or fin systems. Thank You.

The fins I have right now feel like they don't have enough grip in the pocket. Sometimes when I'm bottom turning to pull into the barrel, I feel like I lose control of the fins on the wave and the board feels like it slips off. Since this is one of my step up/ bigger wave boards, I want more control rather than release for those bigger days at SF OB. I normally ride futures but I happened to pick up a new/used board and since everything besides the fin system was what I wanted I got them. I don't really know about FCSII fins and have never really ridden them so maybe I need to get used to them or something. I'm not sure.

Fin Guru Response:

Hi Aiden how are you!?

So the liters on your board are a little high for your weight. And Lost boards tend to have a little fuller rail. The medium Mayhems are great for your weight but tend to run a little smaller than say the John John Medium when you compare medium fin to medium fin. So what your describing sounds like all these factors combined are causing the breakdown in the way the board is performing. Without a doubt i would go with a different fin, especially since it is your step up.

First with your weight being 151 and riding 28.5 liters you are not able to utilize your rails effectively say like a 175lb person would on that same board. So, we need to rely on the fin for more hold. The Kolohe has a longer base and has more rake. The base will give you more drive and the rake will draw out your turns a little more which is fine on bigger waves as you will not turn as tight as you would in smaller waves.

The Kolohe Medium has a base of 4.53 and Mayhem med has a base of 4.30

Kolohe medium has 35.1 for rake and Mayhem med has 31.9

Kolohe med surface area is 14.73 and Mayhem med is 14.49

so the Kolohe would be way better fin for you in this situation.

Only other thing you could do is run the Mayhem large  - it has a base of 4.41(still shorter than Kolohe med) sweep of 31.9(for pivot),  a bigger depth and more surface area at 15.26.

But to keep it in the wheel house of your weight and being able to use these fins in more situations than just big surf, the Kolohe Med might be a good fin for you to have around.

let me know what you do and how it goes.

Hope that Helps!,
