Black surfers struggle to triumph in “White Wash”

Black surfers: proudly wearing the new and exclusive firing wetsuits

Is surfing a sport of the white Western world? What was the last non-Christian surfer you've met? Have you seen a Muslim, Buddhist or Hindu surfer lately?

Surfing has always been one of the true sports of the world, as a global community of many nationalities, races, religions, skin colours and gender. Surfers travel the world and are usually keen to discover the cultures, societies and landscapes of the four corners of the planet.

However, not all ethnic groups have the same opportunities in surfing. That is why director and filmmaker Ted Woods decided to embrace the challenge of unveiling the complex of race in America through the eyes of the ocean.

Art Brewer photography: always in the best seat of the line-up

The School of Visual Arts will be presenting "Art Brewer: Surf Evolution", a retrospective celebrating the work of legendary surf photographer Art Brewer, who has spent four decades documenting and shaping surf culture around the globe.

The exhibition will be on view at the SVA Gallery, New York City, from June 8th–30th. Often described as “the court painter” for the world’s surfing elite, Art Brewer is known for his mastery of the numerous technical and physical challenges involved in surf photography.

"Art has thoroughly examined the sport of surf riding with an unparalleled sensitive ferocity...an underlying introspection is seamlessly incorporated into his works via a technical mastery which comes across as easy and elegant", explains filmmaker C.R. Stecyk, in the exhibition essay.

Where in the world is Bobby Martinez?

Bobby Martinez: listening to his favourite F-quotes

Where in world is Bobby Martinez? The bad boy with the young smile is living the life of his dreams. Wave after wave, the Californian rider of Mexican descent enjoys his free surfing daily habits in the Santa Barbara beaches, where he lives. No stress, no points, no heats.

After the famous Quiksilver New York post-heat interview, Martinez was suspended from the ASP World Tour. H knew it was going to happen, but he simply had to say what he had in his mind for quite a while.

"First of all, I'd like to say - and the ASP are going to fine me - 'cuz I don't want to be a part of this dumb fucking wannabe tennis tour. All these pro surfers want to be tennis players".

"I've been here before. I love this city. I'll tell you right now, if my sponsor wasn't here, I wouldn't be here for this dumb contest. ASP? They fucking... surfing's going down the drain thanks to these people."

The Dog's Guide to Surfing: hang in there...dude

The 1st Annual World Surf Dog Championships will take place in Northern California, between late summer and early fall 2012. A portion of the proceeds will go to dog and environmental non-profit organizations.

The unusual event follows the success of the Small Wave Surf Dog Competition debuted in 2006. The very first surf dog competition was based on the book "The Dog's Guide to Surfing".

The organizers of the new international surf dog contest series will include, promote and welcome local surf groups, dog and pet organizations and fun-loving friends.

"The Dog's Guide to Surfing" is the book that created and launched an entirely new official sport. It's the only guide to the surfing lifestyle from the view of surfers who love to hang ten with man's best friend.

Sarah Hughen surfed 365 consecutive days against cancer

Sarah Hughen: a wave a day to keep cancer away

Sarah Hughen, a surfer from Wisconsin, has completed a year of surfing for the cause of breast cancer. She planned to surf every day, during 365 days straight with no exceptions, and she finally made it on the 30th April.

"I can't believe I am going to be saying this... I'm done! So surreal", said Hughen on the last day of her consecutive surfing year. The red hair surfer learned to ride waves only when she was an adult, but now she is an experienced waterwoman.

It would be easy to find Sarah. During the last 365 days, she went surfing with one of her three pink surfboards. Sometimes she would surf alone, sometimes she was joined by friends and locals. Sarah Hughen lives in Cardiff, California.

Dusty Payne recovers from long ankle injury

Dusty Payne: preparing a power surfing comeback

Dusty Payne has entered the pit lane. The 23-year old Hawaiian surfer suffered a boring injury during last year's O'Neill Coldwater Classic, at Santa Cruz, and is still away from the hypest racing lanes of the Tour.

In fact, Payne does not know when he is authorized to hit the water with this power surfing skills. The injury proved worse than initially imagined and since then, it’s been plasma transfusions, Nike scientists and the ever-painful waiting game.

Dusty also believes that modern surfing is pushing too much the athlete's ankles and knees, while pulling aerials and sharp carves.

They surf in mysterious ways

Ladder surfboard: design is performance

The first ever Kommetjie Festival, in Cape Town, South Africa, was a very special surfing event. A very clear challenge is set: show the most incredible surf gear.

When prizes such as "Best Dressed Surfer", "Most Original Craft" and "Most Entertaining Surfer" are at stake, you should expect the unexpected.

Michael Grendon easily stood out. He brought a surf ladder board that reminds us of the Red Bull Flugtag, with a very creative gear. Surfing with a step ladder is definitely not easy, but Grendon surfed waves with it.

"The Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro for many years has supported women’s surfing because we consider that it is put to one side by the surfing industry and what we need to support is equality in sport", stated Miguel Galeiras, event organizer.

"Especially when dealing with an event or a World circuit where the entire world is watching the image we are giving of ourselves. The Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro will continue in it’s venture in the future and we hope it is an example to everyone", he added.
