Surfing inspires a classical music orchestra

Orchestra Nova: playing classical music with their new wetsuits

Orchestra Nova has created “Surf”, one of the four key pieces of classical music dedicated to Mother Nature. The orchestral music group formerly known as San Diego Chamber Orchestra promises to leave spectators in a suspended state of mind.

“Surf”, commissioned by Orchestra Nova and composed by Joseph Waters, takes guests on a wild ride, starting at the bottom of the ocean, rising up to feel the exhilaration of surfing high atop the ocean’s best waves, enjoying a calm moment, then encountering another big wave and experiencing the turbulence of the washing machine, to end with a serene sense of enlightenment and fulfillment.

Violinist Lindsay Deutsch and saxophone player Todd Rewoldt, virtuosos of the highest order, are guest artists that play as dueling surfers.

Waters also joins as guest artist on electronics, along with Joel Bluestone, percussionist and Justin DeHart, percussionist. “Surf” is also accompanied by a special commissioned video by Zuriel Waters.

Sally Fitzgibbons takes the Billabong Women’s Rio Pro

Sally Fitzgibbons: looking good, surfing good

Sally Fitzgibbons has taken out the Billabong Women’s Rio Pro over Coco Ho by a score of 14.10 to 14.03 in peaky one-to-three foot (.5 metre) waves at the primary venue of Barra da Tijuca.

In need of a high 7-point ride with just minutes remaining in the heat, Fitzgibbons bashed a blowing lefthander on her backside, notching a 7.93 out of 10 to take the elite win, her second of the year.

“That was so crazy and Coco (Ho) had me on the ropes for sure,” Fitzgibbons said. “I just had my fingers crossed and knew there would be one towards the end. I made a few mistakes and it happens in Finals but I was able to recover there at the end. I’m so excited.”

Oceanside surfers pay tribute to Junior Seau

Junior Seau Paddle-Out: linebacker and surfer

Why does a former NFL star and keen surfer decide to commit suicide at 43? Junior Seau went surfing in San Clemente on Monday, but two days later he decides to leave the world with a warning sign.

Seau has been considered one of the best linebackers in the US football history. He was adored by fans, looked great and lived a happy family life.

When his girlfriend Megan returned home, she found Junior Seau dead in his bed with a gun nearby. Depression? Health problems? Inner demons?

Hundreds of surfers have paid tribute to the USC Trojans star with a splendid paddle-out in front of Junior Seau’s Southern California home. The linebacker really enjoyed surfing and he was frequently seen in the waves enjoying his free time.

“It’s nice to be a part of this contest,” said first-time participant Bobby Martinez. “The format seems fun and there are a lot of good surfers competing, and I’m appreciative to have the chance to join the Series.”

Actually, there will be 40 surfers battling for victory, in an unorthodox format which brings together participants from various surf genres around the globe, offering them the chance to compete at least twice before cuts are made following the second round.

Brazilian shock at the 2012 Billabong Rio Pro

Josh Kerr: shining at Arpoador

The Brazilians were not lucky in the first day of surfing at the 2012 Billabong Rio Pro, played at the Arpoador surf sport. Gabriel Medina, Tomas Hermes, Willian Cardoso, Heitor Alves, Jadson Andre and Raoni Monteiro were relegated to Round 2.

In the clean two-to-four foot (1.5 metre) lefthanders on offer Julian Wilson was in solid form for his opening round bout this morning, posting the day’s highest single-wave score of 9.27 out of 10 en route to attaining the day’s highest heat-total, 17.14 out of 20.

“I got kind of lucky there because Freddy (Patacchia) didn’t go on that wave,” Wilson said. “The set before that, Freddy went on the first wave and the one behind was better. I think he was worried about that happening again and when that second set came through, it lined up really well for me”.

“I got to my feet straight away, but then saw that the section was still building and wasn’t really there yet. I took my time and squared it up because I really wanted to get strong starts to those waves, keep it clean and not try to rush it.”

Russia gets new artificial wave pool for surfing

PerfectSwell: Russian surfers will love it

Russia is the new land of waves and surfing. Serious. American Wave Machines has announced the construction of a 35,000 square foot surf pool for the Sheksna Resort, in Russia. Expect 6-footers and 10 waves per minute.

The new PerfectSwell model 1672 wave pool will be installed at the Russia’s Leading Spa Resort, according to the World Travel Awards. PerfectSwell promises a new approach to generating large waves in pools with the emphasis on wave quality and the surfing experience.

With no moving parts in the water, sophisticated computer controls modulate wave shape, ride duration, frequency and energy efficiency. Analogous to a phased array design, PerfectSwell wave size is unlimited. Three simultaneously barreling waves across the width of the pool can be generated at intervals as short as six seconds.

Kelly Slater withdraws from Billabong Rio Pro due to injury

Kelly Slater: out of the Quiksilver Pro...er... Billabong Pro Rio

Kelly Slater will not be surfing the Billabong Rio Pro 2012 following a heel injury sustained in Java, Indonesia. “I injured the inside of my left heel in Java and then re-opened it again the following week at Cloudbreak,” Slater said.

“It became infected and I flew to Australia to get it treated and stitched in hopes of making it to Rio, if not for Round 1, at least for Round 2. I’ve been in the water since getting it stitched and while I can go straight, I can’t do turns at all right now so I’ll have to pull out of Rio”, added the Floridian.

“It’s unfortunate, but I’m just going to focus on healing up as soon as possible right now. Good luck to all the competitors in Brazil and I’ll be watching online”. Slater has been replaced by Willian Cardoso.

The fastest surfing wave in the world has been saved

Freight Trains: the famous Maalaea surf break has been saved

After 23 years of intense battles, the famous Maalaea surf break, in Hawaii, has been saved. The break, also known as “Freight Trains”, is widely lauded as the world’s fastest wave.

The victory came last week, when the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources and the United States Army Corps of Engineers announced that they would be abandoning plans to extend the breakwater at Maalaea Harbor.

The Surfrider Foundation and other groups have long opposed the project for fear that it would destroy large sections of coral reef and irreparably damage the nearby surf break.

The authorities cited high costs, community and enviromental concerns as the reason for the suspension of the breakwater project. The endless and super fast tube ride is very popular in the local surfing community, as well as in the entire world.

Surfing in the Olympic Games is a far away swell

Rio de Janeiro: the perfect stage for the Olympic surfing test

Almost but not quite. Close, but no cigar. Surfing is the most popular board sports in the world with over 20 million active enthusiasts, yet, until 2020, we aren’t seeing it in the Olympic Games.

It started as an ancient spiritual activity and now is one of the most relevant water sports in the planet with an industry worth 10 billion dollars (8 billion euros). Today, it’s quite easy to get waves almost everywhere.

There are 1,6 million kilometres (2,5 million miles) of coastline to find waves in the entire world. All the 30 editions of the Summer Olympic Games held since 1896 were organized in countries with coastline.

Surfing has never made a guest appearance at the Olympic Games. Sports like badminton, squash, softball, golf, curling, canoe/kayak, BMX, table tennis, tug of war, ballooning, bowling, Finnish baseball, glima, gliding, korfball, savate and water skiing have already or will have a chance of showcasing in the Olympic Games.
